How to Get to Cappadocia

Cappadocia doesn't have its own major airport, which surprises some first-time visitors given how famous the region is — you'll fly into one of two regional airports and transfer overland from there.

Kayseri or Nevşehir: which airport to pick

Kayseri Airport (ASR) is the larger and generally better-connected of the two, roughly 70 km from Göreme, about an hour by transfer. It tends to have more flight options throughout the day and slightly more competitive pricing, particularly from Istanbul.

Nevşehir Airport (NAV) is closer to Göreme, around 35 km, putting it at roughly 40 minutes by transfer, though it generally has fewer daily flights than Kayseri. If your travel dates allow a direct Nevşehir flight, the shorter transfer is a genuine time saver, particularly on a late-night arrival.

From Istanbul

Both airports have frequent domestic flights from Istanbul, typically taking around 90 minutes in the air. Most hotels in the Göreme area can arrange a transfer if you give them your flight details ahead of time, and shared shuttle services also meet most arriving flights at both airports, generally cheaper than a private transfer but on a fixed schedule rather than door-to-door timing.

By overnight bus

Cappadocia is reachable from Istanbul in around 10 to 11 hours by bus, a genuinely popular option for budget travelers or anyone who'd rather sleep through the journey than spend a travel day awake. Comfortable overnight coaches run regularly and arrive into Nevşehir or Göreme directly, and the fare is a fraction of a flight, particularly if booked more than a few days ahead.

Combining with Pamukkale

If you're already touring the Aegean coast, buses connect Pamukkale to Cappadocia (typically via Konya or Aksaray) in around 8 to 10 hours — long, but a common overland route for travelers building a longer loop through Turkey without doubling back through Istanbul. Given the distance, this usually makes more sense as an overnight journey than a full daytime transfer that eats into sightseeing time on both ends.

Getting around once you're there

Göreme, Ürgüp, and Uçhisar are all connected by local dolmuş minibuses running throughout the day, cheap and frequent enough for casual sightseeing between towns. For reaching the underground cities, specific valleys, or Avanos, a rental car or an organized day tour both work well — public transport technically reaches most of these but on a much less convenient schedule than either option.

A note on ride-hailing apps

Ride-hailing apps have limited coverage in smaller towns like Göreme and Uçhisar compared to a major city, so check current availability before relying on one — arranging transport the night before through your hotel remains the more reliable option for an early balloon pickup.
