April–May and September–October offer Rome's most comfortable weather — warm enough for sightseeing all day without summer's heat, and considerably less crowded than peak season, though Easter week specifically draws its own separate crowds worth planning around rather than into.

Summer: hot and crowded

June through August brings genuinely uncomfortable heat for a city with limited shade around its major outdoor sites, along with the year's biggest crowds and highest prices. Many Romans leave the city in August specifically, which can mean some smaller family-run restaurants close for the month.

Winter: quiet and affordable

November through February is Rome's quietest, cheapest season, and the city's major indoor sites — the Vatican Museums especially — are noticeably more comfortable to visit without summer's crowds. Outdoor sightseeing works fine in Rome's mild winters, though occasional rain is more likely than in other seasons.

Timed-entry tickets for the Colosseum and Vatican sell out regardless of season during their release windows, so booking ahead matters more than which month you choose.

Holy Week and other religious calendar spikes

Easter week draws exceptionally large crowds to Rome and the Vatican specifically, and major religious events at St. Peter's can affect Vatican access on short notice — worth checking the Vatican's own calendar if your dates happen to overlap with a significant date on the Catholic calendar.

August: quieter than you'd expect, in a specific way

Despite being peak tourist season, August sees many Romans leave the city for their own summer holidays, which can mean a strange mix of packed tourist sites and shuttered neighborhood restaurants — worth knowing so a closed favorite doesn't feel like bad luck.
