Pamukkale Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Pamukkale is two sites in one: the white travertine terraces that give the place its name, and the ruins of Hierapolis directly above them, all covered by a single entrance ticket. Most visitors need somewhere between three and six hours to see both properly, depending on how much of Hierapolis you want to walk and whether you plan to swim in Cleopatra's Antique Pool.

The terraces are formed by calcium carbonate deposited by thermal springs as they flow down the hillside — a process that's been running for thousands of years and is still active today, though the flow is managed across different sections, so some terraces may be dry when you visit. Walking on the terraces is barefoot only; shoes damage the surface and aren't permitted past the entrance point.

Because Pamukkale sits somewhat apart from Turkey's other major sights, it's usually visited as part of a longer loop — commonly paired with Ephesus to the west or worked into a route between the Aegean coast and Cappadocia.
