Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Guide

The bamboo grove itself is a short walk — maybe ten minutes end to end — but its photos have made it one of Kyoto's most recognizable images, which means it also draws serious crowds.

Timing is everything

Arriving right at opening, before 8am, is the only reliable way to photograph the path without dozens of other visitors in frame — by mid-morning it can feel more like a queue than a walk.

What else is nearby

Tenryu-ji temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its own garden, sits right at the bamboo grove's edge, and the Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River makes a scenic add-on.

Getting there

A local train or bus from central Kyoto takes around 20-25 minutes to reach Arashiyama.

Beyond the grove

The wider Arashiyama district includes a monkey park with city views and several smaller temples worth a half-day if the bamboo grove alone doesn't fill your visit.

The Sagano Romantic Train

A scenic sightseeing train runs along the Hozugawa River near Arashiyama, offering mountain and river views as an alternative or addition to walking the bamboo grove itself.

Arashiyama's maple trees make it a popular autumn leaf viewing spot as well, meaning the district gets a second wave of crowds beyond the bamboo grove's usual visitors each November.

A short hike up a hill near the bamboo grove leads to a park with wild Japanese macaques and panoramic views over the district and city beyond.

Whichever sights you combine with the grove itself, allow more time than you'd expect — the district rewards a slower, half-day pace rather than a rushed hour.

Traditional wooden boats offer short rides along the Hozugawa River near the Togetsukyo Bridge, a relaxed way to see the district's scenery from the water.

Whichever combination of sights you choose, arriving by mid-morning at the latest gives the best chance of experiencing the area before tour groups fully arrive.

Combining with a Kyoto day trip

Arashiyama works well as a self-contained half-day loop, easy to combine with a return to central Kyoto for an afternoon at a different sight entirely.

However you spend your time here, the bamboo itself is worth a second, slower pass at the end of your visit, once the earlier rush has thinned out.
